Single Portal Arthroscopy (SPA) is an innovative approach to standard knee arthroscopic surgery. This is a state-of-the-art minimally invasive method for treating knee joint injuries.
Although standard knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, reducing the two or three incisions to one results in faster recovery, less pain, and better movement in less time.
Dr. Grimes is the first surgeon in California to perform single portal arthroscopy of the knee and has done over 100 cases.
As you would expect, Single portal arthroscopy is somewhat more challenging to do than multi-portal arthroscopy because all of the instrumentation goes through a single 8mm (1/3 inch) incision. Dr. Grimes found that his 20+ year experience doing hip arthroscopy and single portal endoscopic carpal tunnel release helped him to learn this technique very rapidly.
SPA is also used by the team orthopaedic surgeons for two NFL teams (Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars). Returning professional athletes to their game as fast as possible is important to the athlete and their teams. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a professional football player to have this procedure. Dr. Grimes has brought this advanced technology to Bakersfield to get you back to your game faster. Dr. Grimes has been impressed at how patients of all ages–teenagers to 70+ year olds–seem to do better with SPA.
